It was clear for JGC Corporation and its JV Partner for the IGD Habshan 5 Project that in order to reach the goals of the entire project, they would need to embrace their commitment to safety.  This was not just a matter of education; they required a shift in cultural norms and thinking.

One of the critical components of this was to form the Incident and Injury-Free® (IIF®) Leadership Team (IIF®  LT) comprising of decision makers from all the major companies involved in this project.  This is the group of like-minded and committed individuals who would lead the engagement and be accountable for the results generated.

The change started from the Commitment and Alignment Workshops led by JMJ Associates.  In these workshops, Senior Management across all organizations and disciplines align their commitments toward the goal that everyone in the project goes home safe everyday with no exceptions.

The project management also encouraged their subcontractors to include all levels of management in the daily Safety Task Analysis Risk Reduction Talk (STARRT) and Tool Box Talks (TBT).  The results of these enhanced daily meetings were evident from the safety metrics and subcontractors also saw the benefits reflected in their improved progress and quality.

IIF® Unit Leaders and IIF® Patrols were formed.  The main role of the IIF® Patrols were to hold constant discussions with the workforce, getting them clear on what IIF® was all about.

The overall perception of care on concern on the project increased.  Communication barriers were removed leading to the workforce operating as one high performing project team on the IGC Habshan 5 project.

There were a number of creative appreciation approaches used throughout the project to recognise safe behavior.  These included but were not limited to the STARRT Team Leader of the Month and Best Area of the Month, where employees were recognized in front of their peers and awarded with a commemorative plaque.  The workforce were also continually rewarded for safe behavior through distribution of telephone cards, an incentive that enabled them to connect with their families.
